Why do some pieces slip into memory quickly and others feel so hazy? And what about the fear of memory slips on stage? Memorizing a piece well is like putting together a puzzle; you use multiple pieces that fit together in order to see the whole picture. This workshop will offer those puzzle pieces b providing a broad toolbox of memorization techniques that draw on multiple learning styles. These techniques reinforce memory and build confidence so that you can perform from memory with ease and satisfaction!

Students are often told to “just feel it” or listen to their “internal pulse.” But what happens when you aren’t “feeling” it? How can you begin to change or improve such an internal process? Eurhythmics is a kinesthetic method of rhythmic education that focuses demystifying rhythm for students. Taking an embodied approach, it treats rhythm as a practicable, learnable skill. In this hands-on workshop, we explored strategies from eurhythmics that are useful tools in a classroom teaching. Presented by the NafME chapter at UMass Amherst led by Stephen Paparo.

This recital featured works by David Lang, Luciano Berio, Benjamin Britten, Elliott Carter, and Angélica Negrón as well as premieres of works by Christine Hedden, Alex Koi, and myself. The first half of the program featured expanding vocabulary for acoustic harp and the second half of the program featured works for harp and electronics. Christine Hedden’s piece Kitchen Dance also featured Nadine Dyskant-Miller on flute and Benjamin Landen on percussion with the composer herself on fídíl. Alex Koi’s piece also featured Jamie Bastian on trombone, Peter Formanek on alto saxophone, Andrew Peck on bass, Amanda Ross on trumpet, and Christopher Tabaczynski on tenor saxophone. The second part examined the basics of harp composition, with a particular emphasis on handy tips not often found in orchestration textbooks. The final part was an open Q and A with students.
